“So You Want to Be A Wizard” is a beginner friendly talk that gives an overview of what it's like to be a developer and how you can get started.
This presentation covers all your standard wizardry topics, like
- muggles (the difference between creators and consumers),
- houses (what kind of software developer positions you can go into),
- flying (what you can do to become a better developer),
- potions (what specific tools are out there to help you become a better developer),
- the dark arts (your real reasoning behind wanting to become a developer),
with a nice a hearty conclusion (ultimately you should forge your own path).

Frances Coronel is a software engineer specializing in UI development on the Customer Acquisition Team at Slack where her mission is to make your working life simpler, more pleasant and more productive.
She has been working professionally as a developer since 2015 and has both a Bachelors and Masters in Computer Science.
Frances is also the Co-Director of Techqueria, a 501c3 nonprofit that serves the largest community for Latinx in Tech in the US and the host of Tech Queens, the first podcast that focuses on the stories and advice shared by women of color in tech.
Her passions outside of work include contributing to open-source, public speaking and mentoring other people of color in tech.
